Fresh snowfall

Teresa Fisher

With the recent heavy snowfall across most of the Alps, for those who gambled with a late ski holiday, it has definitely paid off.  They have been rewarded with relatively quiet slopes after the Easter rush, and truly awesome snow conditions.

The new snow is so great that even though some resorts have already closed, others are extending their season!

The statistics are startling for this time of year.  Sölden in Austria has reported a massive one metre of new snow in the past five days.  Kitzbühel has extended its season until 1 May, and other resorts are expected to follow suit.  The Dachstein Glacier is claiming a snow depth of 570cm on the summit.  This is now fast approaching the Alpine record for this year – held for some weeksn now by Engelberg, with 595cm.  Engelberg has received 40cm in the past few days, as have the Swiss resorts of Crans Montana and Andermatt.

In France, Serre Chevalier reported a remarkable 65cm of fresh snow overnight on Wednesday.  Chamonix and Argentière have each received a 30cm dump of white stuff in the past 24 hours, with Les Carroz d’Araches, Avoriaz and La Clusaz clocking 20cm or more.

If you are still hoping to come out to the Alps to enjoy these final powder days, there are some fantastic family ski bargains here (or complete our tailor-made holiday-finder form here).  But hurry before it’s too late.   Spring really is just around the corner!…
