Even though the long, hot sunny spell is definitely over, anyone skiing in the Alps this coming weekend is in for a real treat!
It’s snowing now, down to as low as 1,000m in some resorts. In fact, maddeningly, some of the heaviest snow for weeks is forecast to fall across the region today, just as resorts start to wind down for the end of the season. Forget a return to sunny slopes and slushy afternoon snow of the past few weeks for the foreseeable future! More of the white stuff is expected on Thursday, Friday and Saturday – with cold temperatures and up to 50cm anticipated in some resorts.
Quite a few resorts have already closed , including many in Italy, which may get its heaviest snow of the season this week.
Most resorts are due to close on April 15 or 22 (and most ski packages also stop then), so the snow will really be of interest only to locals unless you are planning a final fling for some last-minute powder skiing.
Some resorts are staying open longer: Obergurgl and Val d’Isère until 1 May; Cervinia until 6 May; Tignes and Val Thorens until 8 May; St Moritz until the end of May. After that, there are still plenty of glaciers open (Saas Fee, Zermatt, Hintertux…)
