GB medal hopefuls at Beijing

GB medal hopefuls at Beijing

As the Beijing Winter Olympics begin, just who are the favourites in Team BG’s fifty-strong squad of snowsport Olympians this time round?…

On snow, we’ll be watching closely the likes of James Woods, Kirsty Muir (at 17, the youngest of the squad) and Charlotte Bankes. Charlotte is currently world champion in snowboard cross and has been in fine form on the circuit this winter, taking bronze in Cortina last month. Fingers crossed she might pull of a gold for GB.

Medal hopeful, and freestyle skier Izzy Atkin, has decided to pull out of the Big Air competition in Beijing but she is still hoping to complete in the slopestyle however, the discipline in which she won a bronze medal at the Pyeongchang Games in 2018.

Then there’s Katie Ormerod in the snowboard slopestyle; Matt Weston in the skeleton; and Brad Hall who leads the four and two-man bobsleigh teams, currently ranked fourth and fifth.

Charlotte Bankes, one to watch for gold

We’ll be watching the curling closely too (…and we don’t just mean the trousers of the Norwegian team) for GB medals – fingers crossed. Going into the competition, the British mixed and the men’s teams, both captained by Bruce Mouat, are tipped for gold; and the women’s team, skippered by Eve Muirhead, are tipped for bronze.  Can we possibly repeat the nation’s frenzied excitement of 2002 when Rhona Martin and her team topped the podium in Salt Lake City?  Here’s hoping. We will be watching closely, clutching our brooms…

Good luck to you all from the team here at FamilySkiNews.
