Skiplex: Improve your ski technique

Teresa Fisher

One of our reporters, Briony Key, recently tried out a Skiplex.  Here’s what she had to say:

Great concentration, Briony!

Think dry ski slope and I’m sure many of you will be haunted by the same memories as me – getting your fingers caught in the hard matting as you fall.  It’s certainly not easy being a beginner on carpet!

Skiplex wipes away those bad times with a new concept that focuses mainly on your ski technique.  It’s based on a continuously revolving indoor slope that’s more like a carpet than a hard base.

There are three Skiplex venues in the UK – Chiswick, Reading and, new or this season, Basingstoke.

Each slope at Skiplex (4m wide and 9.5m long) can rotate up to speeds of 25mph, with the slope gradient adjusted to suit the skiers’/snowboarders’ ability.

The sessions are led by qualified instructors offering real time feedback – and with a giant mirror at the base of the slope you can see your progress immediately.

For advanced level skiers/boarders, this allows for fine tuning of technique whilst beginners gain a better understanding of what the instructor is requiring them to do.

It’s hard work, as your time is very focused and your muscles do moan, but it pushes your technique forward quickly, giving you confidence to tackle the snow and to get more from your ski holiday.

There are plenty of non-skiing activities for families at each of the three Skiplex centres too.

Skiplex Basingstoke is part of a larger entertainment venue that includes Airkix Indoor Sky Diving, Brush Boarding and Sim Car Racing.

The other venues also have various events in the forthcoming months, including the Slide2Sochi Sunday at Reading, this Sunday, October 6. Olympic skiers Chemmy Alcott and Graham Bell will be giving their top ski tips.  There will also be face painting and a barbeque.

Or you can check it out during half term, when Skiplex Reading is running a half-term Kids Camp on the 28th, 29th and 30th October. Children will have time on and off the slope, playing games, race training, synchronised skiing and snowboarding.

Skiplex is also proud to be supporting the GO SKI GO BOARD campaign launched last month by Snowsports England.  Skiers can take advantage of three six-week courses at Skiplex Reading and Skiplex Basingstoke starting 6th, 7th and 8th November.

For further information on any of these events, visit the Skiplex website or call 0845 6003599.
