April snow

Family skiing in Les Gets, Easter Monday

The snow’s been superb for the Easter week!

What’s more the next few days look promising too… thanks to cool temperatures and decent snowfall over the last weekend.

Even though it’s April, the snow remains surprisingly good across the Alps, especially for those skiing in those high-altitude resorts which enjoyed 30-50cm of fresh powder between last Thursday and Sunday.  Avalanche risk is currently very high.

However, there’s no denying that spring has finally reached the mountains, and the snowy peaks are bathed in glorious sunshine.

For those of us lucky enough to be in the mountains this week, the sun is pretty strong -ideal for those long-awaited lazy al fresco lunches on the slopeside terraces – but it does mean that the south-facing runs and the slopes at village level in many ski areas will be slushy by early afternoon.

Whenever the sun comes out conditions change very quickly, so aim for the high slopes for the best quality snow.  And don’t forget the sun-block!

The outlook is for spring sunshine and clouds until Thursday when the temperatures will drop and wet weather is forecast.  This will hopefully bring some fresh snow to the higher resorts of northernItalyas well as French, Swiss and Austrian resorts near the Italian border.

Meanwhile, across the pond in resorts of western Canada and America, the mild weather continues and the snow is generally pretty slushy on the lower slopes of most resorts.   Conditions look more promising in the Canadian Rockies, with cooler temperatures and more snow forecast for the weekend.

We will be posting some superb last-minute deals onto the website tomorrow so come back and snap up a last-minute bargain before the end of the season.
