Head high for the best Spring skiing

Teresa Fisher

It may be unseasonably warm in the Alps this week, and the lower pistes may well be slushy at the end of the day, but there is still some excellent spring skiing out there – as long as you head high!

Even with the current warm weather, thanks to the record-breaking snowfalls earlier in the year, the season should remain sensational right to the end of the season.

Snow depths are still between 220cm-360cm in France which, compared to the seasonal average of 185cm, is pretty impressive.  Argentière and Chamonix are currently claiming the nation’s top snow depths in France, of 360cm each, followed by Flaine, La Clusaz and Les Carroz d’Araches with 290cm each.  Most of the ski resorts in France are staying open until after the Easter break.

In fact, there are a record number of resorts for this time of year claiming over 3 metres snow depth in the Alps, with Austria’s Dachstein glacier topping them all with measurements in excess of 5 metres.  Other top resorts for snow at present include:

Switzerland: Engelberg (545cm), Andermatt Gotthard Oberalp Arena (400cm); Crans Montana (350cm), Laax (350cm), Saas Fee (344cm), the Lötschental (326cm), Mürren-Schilthorn (319cm) and Gstaad (310cm).

Italy: Ghiacciacio Presena – Adamello Ski (300cm).

Germany: Zugspitze (415cm).

Andorra: Vallnord/Arcalís (300cm).

Austria: The Dachstein glacier (560cm), Zugspitzplatt Erwald (415cm), the Stubai glacier (410cm), Kleinwalsertal (370cm), the Pitztaler glacier (370), St Anton (355cm) and the Hintertux glacier (350cm).

If you’re looking for a last-minute ski deal, check out these resorts and – for the very best conditions – any skiable glaciers.

FamilySkiNews.com was out in Val d'Isere earlier this season with Crystal Ski

Here are our top suggestions for late season glacier skiing in France from one of our partners, Crystal Ski – in Val d’Isère (with two glaciers to ski: the Pissaillas glacier above Val d’Isère, and Grand Motte on the Tignes side); and Les Deux Alpes, Europe’s largest skiable glacier and one of the longest-established ski resorts in France.  In both resorts, the bulk of the skiing is at 2,000m or higher, ensuring well-conditioned pistes right to the end of the season.
