Ryding and Muirhead are flagbearers at Beijing
Two of our greatest Winter Olympians, Dave Ryding and Eve Muirhead have been selected to carry the union flag into the National Stadium in Bejing.
The pair are both competing at their fourth Olympics, and will together carry the union flag into the National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest, tomorrow.
In January, 35-year-old Ryding made history by becoming the first British alpine skier to win a World Cup event, in the slalom in Kitzbuhel.
Ryding said: “As a British Olympian, it is the greatest honour to be asked to carry our country’s flag”
Curling royalty, Eve Muirhead, from Scotland, said: “I’m absolutely delighted. I’m not actually sure if it’s really sunk in yet…it’s definitely going to be a moment that I will never forget.”
Both athletes made their Olympic debut in 2010 in Vancouver. In 2014, Muirhead skippered the British curling team to a bronze medal in Sochi. In Bejing, she heads up the British women’s curling team.
Ryding is one of 21 GB ski and snowboard athletes competing in Beijing – part of a four-person squad together with Charlie Guest, Billy Major and Alex Tilley. At the peak of his form, he is hoping to improve on his previous Olympic best – when he came ninth at the Pyeongchang Games in 2018.
