PyeongChang Winter Olympic highlights for TeamGB

PyeongChang Winter Olympic highlights for TeamGB

As the Winter Olympics gets underway for 2018 in PyeongChang in South Korea, with a packed schedule and 102 gold medals to be won, here’s the FamilySkiNews.com guide to help you watch and enjoy all the action.

PyeongChang in South Korea is nine hours ahead of GMT.  The good news is that the daytime competition will take place when most of us are at home rather than at work. The bad news is that you’ll need to stay up late or get up very early to catch the best of the action live.

There are six new events and a total of 102 gold medals up for grabs – more than at any other Winter Olympics.

The PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics will be covered in the UK by the BBC and Eurosport.

Lizzy Yarnold will carry the flag for TeamGB at the Opening Ceremony

Some of the events have started already.  The curling mixed doubles and ski jumping began today – even thought it’s one day before the official opening of the games when defending skeleton gold medallist Lizzie Yarnold will be carrying the TeamGB flag.

Team GB has sent its biggest delegation of snowsports athletes to the Games.

TeamGB has a good chance of winning a clutch of medals, with Katie Ormerod favourite for a couple of golds.  And the team’s top alpine racer Dave Ryding (currently placed 8th in the world rankings) could make British Olympic history if he can match the incredible form that saw him secure the best result by a British alpine skier since 1981 when he came second in the World Cup in Kitzbühel in January.

There are 15 disciplines in total.  They are: Alpine skiing, Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Cross-country skiing, Curling, Figure-skating, Freestyle skiing, Ice hockey, Luge, Nordic combined, Short track, Skeleton, Ski jumping, Snowboard and Speed-skating.

You can see the full schedule for all 15 disciplines HERE.

Here are some of the highlights for your diary over the next couple of weeks:

Snowboard Slopestyle competitions will be on 10-12 February.
Men’s Downhill is on 11 February.
15km Skiathlon is on 11 February.
Ski Slopestyle events are on 17-18 February.
Women’s Downhill is on 21 February.
Men’s Slalom is on 22 February.
Snowboard Big Air contests are on 23 and 24 February.

Good luck TeamGB!
